Manuel Antonio Noriega’s Israeli associate, Michael Harari, says the United States made Noriega what he was and then overthrew him when the Panamanian tried to break with the Americans.

“The Americans realized Noriega was acting independently, and this didn’t totally please them,” Harari said in a television interview.

“This was the beginning of the rupture in relations, but Noriega was pro-American. In fact, it was the Americans who made Noriega.”

The lengthy interview on Israel Television was Harari’s first extensive explanation of his Noriega connection since his whereabouts attracted world attention after the U.S. invasion of Panama Dec. 20.

Harari…

General Noriega is America’s only official prisoner of war.

Following the Dec. 20, 1989 U.S. military invasion of Panama, ostensibly to serve an arrest warrant on the Panamanian head of state, based on bogus drug-trafficking charges, Noriega was taken to the U.S. and tried in federal court in Miami, Florida and convicted. He was officially classed by the court as a prisoner of war, and, he is, to this day, allowed to wear his Panamanian Defense Forces uniform, as he serves a 40-year sentence, and awaits the next phase of his appeal.

On March 9, 1997, CBS News’s “Sixty Minutes”…

A 306-page report issued in August by the government of Panama, “16 Years of Struggle Against Drug Traffic” reports an untold story, the history of the Panamanian Defense Forces’ war against the narcotics empire, as it has escalated over the years under the personal command of the man who today heads that Force, Gen. Manuel Antonio Noriega.

“16 Years of Struggle” was issued in defense of General Noriega, against an international campaign of slander, innuendo, and rumor launched by Panama’s opposition forces and the U.S. State Department.

The campaign painted Noriega as “the protector of ‘the Panamanian Connection’ “of narcotics…

“A Question of Sovereignty” by Partido Revolucionario Democratico (PRD)

On March 4, the Mexican daily El Dia published in full a communique issued by Panama’s Revolutionary Democratic Party (PRD).

Excerpts follow:

The existence in Panama of an alleged conflict between military and civilians of a purely local nature has been declared, when what is developing here is a new episode in our nation’s fight for its sovereignty, which is clearly tied to the global policy of the aggressor party, the United States, towards the whole of Latin America.

The behavior of each and every Panamanian, be they worker, priest, businessman…

The following are excerpts from a March 4 interview by the Mexican daily Excelsior, with Panamanian Defense Forces chief Gen. Manuel Antonio Noriega:

“Panama is suffering an aggression joined by Panamanians whose brain is the Panamanian oligarchy, whose brain is the United States, the U.S. ‘establishment.’ And aggression by that nation, the most powerful on Earth, against a nation with only two million inhabitants. Of course, there is a reason for this: Panama has a canal, a geographic ‘waist,’ from which Washington could usurp not only Mexican territory, but also Panamanian territory.”
